The Starfish Philosophy of Blackberry Canyon Animal Society The Starfish Story by Loren Eisly One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” “Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!” After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…”I made a difference for that one.”
At BCAS we believe that an animal deserves not only a chance at a permanent home but the reality of one as well. While we only shelter what would likely be a days worth of euthanasia in a midsized US city, we strive for an environment that protects the friendships and bonds that our four-legged residents develop. The majority of animals at Blackberry Canyon were placed unsuccessfully in a number of different homes. Many of them were either abandoned, neglected or abused which left scars that are not easily mended. To help restore their confidence in mankind they are now cared for and given love, consistency and the reality of a home they can call their own. While the beach is long and the starfish are many—we work to make a difference for the one.
